I first read this statement that Malawi will not host the AU summit on tweeter (hello technology) , in my immediate reaction i said stupid, idiots (meaning the Malawi Government) how dare them cancel the summit after all the preparation, people preparing the business and money they were going to make. Keep in mind that the statement i read just said we are not hosting the summit and nothing else. I had to feel in the blanks; that was not a pretty sight . Detailed reports took a while to trickle in that I was not sure if someone was trying to mess with us. Then it became clear with multiple sources confirming it.
40 minutes later I was mad, livid but beneath it all I was disappointed that the AU; this great institution that’s their to promote African Unity and Peace was bowing down to the whimps of one Leader. Like a mother , endearing a spoilt child who likes to play with guns and smiles when he hurts his brothers and sisters. How does a whole institution accept one man’s request over the concerns of others. This had me wonder does Al-Bashir make contributions to the AU that we are not aware of? How much influence does he have?
Of course other African president that are on the path of being Al-Bashir will support the decision from the inside, for they know the AU will always have their back. This decision says to me that AU condones states that perpetrate violence against others.
I have to applaud the Malawian cabinet for standing on and holding to a decision they took (no matter what the reason might be). A leader is only as great as her/his word and I am happy when leaders stand firm on their decisions.
In the evening my Dad was be amused and in shock disbelief that the AU in its wholeness accepted the requests demand of one man who has facilitated the suffering of generations of his neighbours. How ?? He asked and still wonders.
It’s high time we look into our institutions that promote global governance and see if they do not promote agenda that serve only 1% of the people they serve and work with.
Come July I hope PING goes and Zuma takes the helm,…a little revenge wouldn’t hurt now,…would it. It’s high time I and we all took a closer look at the inside workings of the AU.
